Exhibition Theme
Founded in the early 20th century as an alternative vegetarian colony, Monte Verità quickly became a cradle of European counterculture as prominent artists, anarchists, philosophers and dancers settled there.
Key themes apparent in the exhibited works are Dance, Nature and the Human Body as forms of expression of artistic and spiritual freedom. An important part of the exhibition will be dedicated to three movements that were integral to the philosophical foundations of Monte Verità: Lebensreform ("life reform") which emerged at the end of the nineteenth, beginning of the twentieth century, Freikörperkultur (free body culture) and dance.
The exhibition highlights how the iconography of European artists in the first quarter of the twentieth century was influenced by the way of life on Monte Verità.

"This meticulously researched exhibition is an opportunity to celebrate an exceptional artistic centre, which, in its own way, shaped the rich cultural landscape of the early 20th century. It shows how artists explored the idyllic image of Switzerland as an earthly paradise as well as the intellectual and artistic scene that developed around Monte Verità."
Sofia Komarova, Director of Artvera's Gallery. |

About Artvera's
Artvera's is a Geneva-based art gallery specializing in European and Russians masters of modern art. Since opening its doors in 2007, Artvera's programme has been distinguished by its museum-like approach. All exhibitions are accompanied by meticulously researched and thoroughly illustrated catalogues, produced by Artvera's, in collaboration with leading art scholars and experts. Due to the gallery's access to significant art collections, the gallery exhibits exceptional works by celebrated modern artists, including Bonnard, Derain, Goncharova, Jawlensky, Pechstein, Schmidt-Rottluff, Signac, Sisley and Vlaminck. To complement the stable of 20th Century Modern masters, Artvera's also showcases noteworthy nationally and internationally established and emerging contemporary artists. The 5,400 square foot gallery, divided into six exhibition rooms, occupies a lovingly restored medieval building in the heart of the old town. The gallery is led by director Sofia Komarova. Schooled in St. Petersburg and Geneva, Komarova possesses a vast wealth of knowledge and a wide range of expertise in acquisition and appraisal.
